November is National Novel Writing Month

It’s a big job, writing a novel, but NaNoWriMo turns a daunting ambition into a celebration, hundreds of thousands of writers coming together to cheer each other on through this mad dash at creation. 50,000 words. 30 days. It’s absolutely doable.

Except, my head would explode if I started something new right now. Between seasonal depression and holiday angst, I feel like I’d be setting myself up for failure. But maybe that’s a good reason to try a little harder this month. Not having a new project to embark on or any hope of writing 50,000 words of anything before November 30th doesn’t mean I can’t harness the energy and hype of NaNoWriMo to fuel my work in progress through an otherwise dismal and difficult month. The Book has been waiting patiently for my undivided attention after far too many sojourns into short stories and at least one accidental novella. For NaNoWriMo I’m giving it, and myself, the time it deserves.

I’m 1,007 words in as of this post—not much, but more than I would have written if NaNoWriMo energy hadn’t reminded me to look up from my life and get excited about the work.

Who’s participating in NaNoWriMo 2019? Did you start a novel on November 1st, or are you playing by your own rules? What are you working on? Share in the comments!

P.S. Add me as a writing buddy!
